The Air From Yesterday

THE AIR FROM YESTERDAY

No one would notice, it wouldn’t affect the world

This is a plastic bag with air from yesterday. I blew the air in with a pump and sealed the bag.

The air is something from the past.
It had a function, an impact and a story yesterday.
In fact, it had a story for millions of years.

The air in this bag is so old that we can’t even tell when this little liter of air started to exist.
Air is something that constantly changes, that travelled the world
and maybe more than the world.

But we never notice it. We take it for granted, even more than water.

The air in this bag hasn’t been in touch with the present yet.
It is protected by the plastic layer.
It is a relict from the past.
It still exists but it cannot interact with the present.

You could argue that if you blow up a balloon, the air inside is also not in contact with the present,
but in that case the air serves the balloon.
The intention is to have a blown-up balloon and the balloon needs the air to stay blown up.
This is the case with anything that contains air.

Objects need air in order to exist and to maintain their shape.

The plastic bag’s shape is in first place flat and in this case my intention was not to blow up a plastic bag.

The bag serves the air.
The shape of the plastic bag is determined by the air.

It gives the air a space which protects it against the influence of today.

This all being said,
if I would stick a needle into this bag,
then at once, the air from the past, the only thing in this room that I could think of,
which has not yet been in touch with the present,
would mix up with the present within a fraction of a second.

No one would notice, it wouldn’t affect the world.

Imagine you could do the same with your Self from the past.

If you could put a part of your thoughts in a plastic bag,
keep it sealed, keep it away from the present,
keep it away from interacting with the rest of yourself today.

The part of you in the plastic bag would remain the same but the part outside the plastic bag
would have enough space to grow and to change.

And once you would be ready for it, you could take a needle and let your old Self out of the plastic bag
and it would mix up with your new Self.

No one would notice, it wouldn’t affect the world, but it would affect you.
